I have not felt clear on what to post about the passing of dear ( @katespadeny )Kate Brosnahan Spade but I am walking around so disturbed by her death that I have decided to share. She was a smart, kind and generous soul . My brief encounter with her goes back to when I was the head designer/design director for Lilly Pulitzer ( @lillypulitzer )and she wanted to collaborate with Lilly using the Lilly prints. She was up and coming and I was pushing for the owners to do it( She was just establishing herself so it was a tad risky… I just knew she was spot on with what she was doing.) So, my husband and I had the honor of attending the CFDA awards cocktail event on behalf of “Lilly” in 1996 and I asked Kate(et al) to whip up a bag using a print from our line(on silk) that matched my dress. THIS IS THE BAG IN THE PHOTO.
My husband and I met with Kate and Andy for drinks at the W hotel right before she was celebrated for her 1st CFDA Award. She was lovely and chatty and they were thrilled to be enjoying success.
Anyway, when I left to do my own line, she actually met with me a couple of times in her office to give me advice. She shared the early ups and downs and gave me smart advice. I was so thankful. She was a lovely generous human. We had our boys and I left fashion and did not stay in touch. Her success was ENORMOUS(she probably would not have remembered me). Anyway, I was always so happy for her. She was a very creative soul. I can tell you right now, that this can be a blessing and a curse. I am quite sad for her daughter and for the world. If she could have found a way to address her darkness and pull through into the light, there is life and all we have is this “one precious life”… we must find ways to celebrate it’s preciousness, and pull out of the darkness and help others who need the extra yank out of it. Sorry if I do go on…
